Topics: Exploring Visually Assessed Tongue Features in Cancer Survivors and Longitudinal Changes in Tongue Morphology within Traditional Chinese Medicine
Cancer survivorship is increasing globally, and many people living with and beyond cancer seek supportive care such as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), in which tongue inspection is routinely used as a diagnostic and monitoring tool. While cross-sectional studies suggest that certain tongue features may differ between patients with cancer and healthy individuals, little is known about how these features evolve over time in cancer survivors or whether they reflect clinical trajectories.
Cross-sectional findings suggest that selected tongue features may be associated with cancer presence, although discrimination was modest and reliability varied. Longitudinal observations indicate that tongue morphology may evolve over time in ways that parallel clinical trajectories in breast cancer survivorship. Together, these exploratory findings highlight the need for standardised definitions, improved rater training, and larger prospective multi-centre studies to evaluate whether serial tongue imaging could serve as a low-cost adjunct for monitoring cancer survivorship within integrative care contexts.

Topics: Precise application of Chinese medicine to improve clinical efficacy
Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) refers to medicinal substances used under the guidance of TCM theory. Due to their origins including plants, animals, and minerals, plant-based medicines account for the largest proportion and are the most commonly used.
Historically, the field of pharmacology has been referred to as “traditional herbal medicine.” TCM encompasses a wide range of substances, primarily categorized into medicinal materials (herbal medicines and processed herbal products) and TCM formulations, including traditional clinical formulations (pills, powders, ointments, pills, broths, etc.), Chinese patent medicines, and granules used for combination therapy. The diagnosis and differential diagnosis, as well as the analysis and categorization of causes, mechanisms, and symptoms, serve as the foundation for TCM practitioners in selecting formulas, choosing medicines, selecting meridians and acupoints, and administering treatments.
The content of this lecture includes an exploration of the origins of traditional herbal medicine, the basic plants used, the processes of harvesting and processing, the techniques of cultivation and preparation, the identification of authenticity, the properties and pathways of action, the active constituents, pharmacological and toxicological effects, combination formulas, dosage forms, and interactions between herbs and drugs, all of which are essential for ensuring the rational and precise use of medications and enhancing clinical efficacy.
